Yuechuan Chi's international foundations

Yuechuan Chi is a third year chemistry major and developmental biology specialist with the Cell and System Biology department.

He was one of the first students of the International Foundation Program, which offers admission to academically qualified international students whose English fluency scores fall below the direct entry requirements.

Writer Philip Cox asked Yuechan what he’s been up to since completing the program three years ago.

An acronym for Technology, Entertainment and Design, TED began in the early 1990s as an annual conference in California, with strong ties to the collaborations and innovations coming out of Silicon Valley.

Solar power fuels Trinity College awards

They call them solar bursaries: Trinity College is using money generated from solar panels on its roof to fund research opportunities and awards for students.

Each day the solar panels on the Larkin Building near the corner of Devonshire Place and Hoskin Avenue generate electrical energy which the College sells at a premium to Toronto Hydro. And this year, revenues from those solar panels helped fund 25 student bursaries.

Imagine driving almost 900 kilometres on one litre of gas.

A U of T Engineering student team is hoping to do just that at the annual Shell Eco-Marathon Challenge in Houston, Texas in early April.

The aptly named University of Toronto Supermileage Team will be racing its 90-pound, 1.3 horsepower vehicle—powered by a Honda leafblower motor – against teams representing other universities from Brazil, Canada, Guatemala, Mexico and the United States.

It was all part of the new U of T Women in House program from the Munk School of Global Affairs and the International Relations Program at Trinity College.
