U of T students are six of The Next 36

Six University of Toronto students have been selected as part of The Next 36, the annual program aimed at promoting Canadian entrepreneurship among undergraduate youth.

"I got in and I was shocked," said Simon Bromberg. "I thought there'd be no way I was going to get in, that I'd do my best and that'll be the end of it."

Competition for a spot in the program is stiff and the selection process is rigorous, said Bromberg, who is majoring in biomedical engineering. 

Competing for the Canadian Opera Company

U of T's Andrew Haji and Charlotte Burrage took top prizes at the Canadian Opera Company’s Second Annual Ensemble Studio Competition recently at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Master's student Haji, a tenor, won the second prize and alumna Burrage, a mezzo-soprano, placed third. The top honour went to bass-baritone Gordon Bintner of Regina. 

Gates Foundation backs U of T online courses

The University of Toronto has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop two online learning courses that will be delivered by award-winning U of T professors.

The two courses – the latest in U of T’s involvement in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) programs – are intended to “engage a broad range of students in successfully advancing their general and developmental education,” said the Foundation in announcing the award earlier this month.

University College celebrated its distinguished graduates at the first annual UC Alumni of Influence awards Nov.15, 2012 at the Eglinton Grand in Toronto.

Nearly 400 guests, including 58 of the 100 award-winners or designates, descended upon the restored art-deco theatre for the event.
