Suzuki delivers message about limits of the natural world

Humans face catastrophic environmental change unless we understand that we live in a natural world with inherent limits, says David Suzuki, renowned scientist, activist and environmentalist.

Speaking passionately to an enthusiastic overflow audience at U of T Scarborough's 2012 Watts Lecture,  Suzuki told the audience that humankind has failed to understand that the economy and human society are embedded in the biosphere, which places physical constraints on what we can do.

Disability is a social, political and human rights issue, says Tom Shakespeare, a contributor to the first-ever World Report on Disability.

Shakespeare, a technical officer at the World Health Organization,  was at the University of Toronto recently for the Toronto launch of this World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank report. The WHO, the health agency of the United Nations, focuses on health, rehabilitation and data. However, as Shakespeare noted, disability is far more than just a medical issue.

U of T's Rotman School among Top 10 MBA schools worldwide in research, says Financial Times

In the annual ranking of global MBA programs from the Financial Times, the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management rose two positions to place 44th globally, and 20th in North America, up three spots. The school was also ranked 10th for the research produced by faculty and 15th for its PhD program.

"There is as always lots of room for improvement, but I am pleased with our progress towards being recognized as one of the world's top tier business schools," said Dean Roger Martin.

The University of Toronto honoured more than 250 of its award-winning researchers for their notable achievements and discoveries at the Celebration of Research Excellence event on Jan. 19 at Hart House.

Former Toronto mayor Barbara Hall, chief commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, says it’s a myth that concerns about creed (i.e., religion) in Canada are a recent development.

“It’s fair to say that in the last few years, I’ve heard people remark, ‘You know, creed has never been an issue in Canada until (INSERT GROUP'S NAME HERE) group came and started raising it,” she said during a recent appearance at the University of Toronto.

Award-winning author and activist Shari Graydon wants to know why female experts and bylines are underrepresented in the media, and she has conducted research to get some answers.

“Time is probably one of the biggest obstacles and when I say that to any woman she nods her head,” said Graydon.  “It’s not that male academics aren’t busy, but I think women are really pragmatic in how they invest their time. It’s just one more thing in their busy day, especially if a woman has caregiving responsibilities."
