Professor Molly Shoichet, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering

Professor Molly Shoichet, Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry, Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering, has been named a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The award marks the Queen's 60th year of reign and honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. Shoichet, a world-renowned researcher in the field of regenerative medicine, holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Tissue Engineering. She will receive her medal Feb. 6, 2013, at a ceremony at Roy Thompson Hall.

Professor Valerie Taylor, Faculty of Medicine

Psychiatry professor Valerie Taylor, psychiatrist-in-chief at Women's College Hospital, was awarded the TOPS Research Award from the Canadian Obesity Network. The award recognizes career contributions to research in the field of obesity. Taylor will deliver a keynote address and receive the award in Vancouver in May 2013, at the Canadian Obesity Summit.

Professor Cindy-Lee Dennis, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Cindy-Lee Dennis, Department of Psychiatry & Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, and Shirley Brown Chair in Women’s Mental Health Research  at Women’s College Research Institute was awarded the Hope Inspiration Award from the Mood Disorders Association of Ontario. The award will be presented on February 9, 2013 at the association’s annual “MAD About You” gala, in recognition of Dr. Dennis’s work to improve the prevention and management of postpartum depression.

Professor Michael McGillion, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Professor Michael McGillion of the Lawrence S. Blommberg Faculty of Nursing, is the recipient of the Canadian Pain Society’s (CPS) Early Career Award 2013 for his contributions in the study and advancement of improving care for people living with persistent forms of cardiac pain. This award recognizes his work on finding solutions to manage these forms of pain, which are becoming more prevalent in our aging society and yet are often misdiagnosed.

Professor Ellen Hodnett, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Professor Ellen Hodnett of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, is the recipient of the Canadian Nurses Association’s (CNA) Order of Merit Award in Nursing Research. Hodnett's research focuses on rigorous evaluations of forms of care for childbearing women and also examines how the physical setting for labour affects the behaviour of women and their care providers, as well as birth outcomes.

Professor John English, Faculty of Arts & Science

Professor John English, History Department & Trinity College, and his colleague, Réal Bélanger from Québec City, are winners of this year’s Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media: The Pierre Berton Award, for their stories about Canadians who have significantly contributed to the shaping of our history in The Dictionary of Canadian Biography www.biographi.ca.

Professor George Elliott Clarke, Faculty of Arts & Science

Professor George Elliott Clarke (English), the E.J. Pratt Professor of Canadian literature, has been appointed Toronto Poet Laureate by the Toronto city council.  Clarke takes over the position from Governor General’s Literary Award-winning poet Dionne Brand.  He is the fourth poet laureate of Toronto.

Alex Hayat, Physics, has won the 2012 Polanyi Prize in Physics for research that provides new insights on the fundamental physics of light-matter interaction and quantum optics.

Professor Spyros Alexakis, Faculty of Arts & Science

Professor Spyros Alexakis, Mathematics, has won the 2013 Andre-Aisenstadt Prize. The prize recognizes outstanding research achievement by a young Canadian mathematician.

Professor Stephen Morris, Faculty of Arts & Science

Professor Stephen Morris, Physics, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society "For innovative experimental work in nonlinear dynamics, pattern formation, and geophysical patterns, and significant public outreach”. This is a significant recognition of outstanding contributions to Physics.
