Walid Saleh, religion

Walid Saleh of Religion has been named “Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies” at the University of Toronto. This award recognizes Walid’s achievements in the study of the Qur’an and its commentary literature, and his current work on comparative Islamic and Jewish commentaries.

Amira Mittermaier, religion

Amira Mittermaier of religion has won the American Anthropological Association’s 2011 Clifford Geertz Prize in the Anthropology of Religion for her book Dreams that Matter: Egyptian Landscapes of the Imagination. 

Aaron Wheeler, chemistry

Aaron Wheeler of chemistry has won the Analytical Chemistry 2011 Young Innovator Award which honours exceptional technical advancement and innovation in the field of micro- or nanofluidics achieved eary on in a career.

Professor John Zilcosky, Faculty of Arts & Science

Professor John Zilcosky from the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Arts & Science was elected president of the Research Committee on Literary Theory of the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA). The ICLA is the umbrella organization for research in the field of comparative literature worldwide, and the Research Committee on Literary Theory encourages the study of literary theory through an annual international workshop, various publications, and cooperation with national organizations.

A U of T professor and a PhD student are heading south of the border as beneficiaries of the world-renowned Fulbright program, an educational movement that fosters scholarly exchange between the United States and other countries.

Professor Peter Liu of medicine and physiology

Professor Peter Liu of medicine and physiology is the winner of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s 2011 Annual Achievement Award, created in 1992 in recognition of Canadians who have made outstanding contributions during their careers in the cardiovascular field. The society is the national voice for cardiovascular physician and scientists with a mission to promote cardiovascular health and care through knowledge translation, professional development and leadership in health policy. Liu will receive the award during the 2011 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress.

Professor Patrick Gullane, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Patrick Gullane, chair of otolaryngology, will be awarded an honorary fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the highest honour bestowed by the college, Feb. 4, 2012. Honorary fellowship is awarded in recognition of an individual’s outstanding contributions to medicine, surgery and humanity. The award will be presented at the college’s annual Charter Day meeting at which Gullane has been invited to deliver a keynote lecture.

FACULTY OF LAW

The Faculty of Law’s Internationally Trained Lawyers Program is the recipient of a 2011 InnovAction Award, recognizing outstanding innovation in the delivery of legal services. Awarded by the College of Law Practice Management, the award demonstrates to the legal community what can happen when passionate professionals with big ideas and strong convictions resolve to create effective change. The awards will be presented Oct. 28 at a special session during the 2011 Futures Conference in Chicago.

Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering

Professor Emeritus Michael Charles of chemical engineering and Professors Elizabeth Edwards of chemical engineering, Doug Perovic of materials science and engineering, David Zingg of the Institute Aerospace Studies and Milica Radisic of chemical engineering were recognized by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and Professional Engineers Ontario with Ontario Professional Engineers Awards. Charles is the winner of the Gold Medal, Ontario’s most prestigious engineering award.

Professor Nick Eyles, Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences

Professor Nick Eyles of the Departments of Physical and Environmental Sciences at Scarborough and Geology, St.George, has just been awarded the 2012 Geosciences in the Media Award from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the world's largest professional geological society with more than 30,000 members. The award is presented for notable journalistic achievement in any medium, which contributes to public understanding of geology, energy resources or the technology of oil and gas exploration.
