Dr. Robert Buckman, Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Robert Buckman, who passed away mid-October (see MedEmail Volume 20, Number 4), was the recipient of the American Medical Writer's Association (AMWA) Medical Book Award for 2011 for the "Books for Health Care Professionals - Physicians category. The AMWA is the leading professional organization for written medical information. The book awards were established more than 30 years ago to acknowledge exceptional fictional and non-fictional medical writing.

Alexander Levy, U of T alumnus

 Alexander Levy, MyVoice Inc., is a two-year Martin Walmsley Fellowship recipient.Thousands of Ontarians need to use technology to communicate due to disorders caused by stroke, autism and neurodegenerative diseases. Toronto-based MyVoice Inc. has developed a modern, portable, easy-to-use smart phone application designed to provide users with the words they need quickly and easily.

Professors Peter and Alissa North, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design

North Design Office, the firm founded by Professors Pete and Alissa North, won third prize in the design competition CLOSE THE GAP: Envisioning the East River Greenway for 21st Century New York. Their winning proposal entitled 'Edge Effect' was assisted by Stephanie Cheng, MLA'12.  The international design competition, sponsored by Transportation Alternatives and d3, invited architects, landscape architects, urban designers and engineers from across the world to broaden the dialogue of alternative solutions for sustainable urban living.

University Professor Geoffery Ozin, Faculty of Arts & Science

University Professor Geoffery Ozin, Department of Chemistry, has been inducted into the Royal Society of Chemistry honouring his outstanding contribution to chemistry..  The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences fellowships. 

Dr. Lianne Jeffs, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Dr. Lianne Jeffs has won the Excellence in Precepting: Graduate Award. This both peer- and student-nominated award recognizes excellence in precepting as demonstrated by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to clinical learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Alix Duck, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Alix Duck is the Senior-year Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award winner.  This award recognizes excellence in clinical teaching as demonstrated by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to clinical learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem solving skills. Awarded to a clinical instructor directly engaged in supervising undergraduate students during a clinical placement in the senior year.

Jason Ross & Claire Steer, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Jason Ross and Claire Steer are the Entry-year Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award winners.  This award recognizes excellence in clinical teaching as demonstrated by outstanding professionalism and role modelling; exceptional approach to clinical learning that is supportive, respectful, creative, enthusiastic, evidence-based and student-centred; and effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Dr. Denise Gastaldo & Dr. Karima Velji, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Dr. Denise Gastaldo and Dr. Karima Velji are the winners of The Teaching Excellence Award.  This award recognizes excellence in teaching as demonstrated by superlative communication skills, master of subject area, ability to stimulate enthusiasm and critical/analytic thinking in students, and the development of innovative teaching approaches. This award is student-nominated.

Maki Iwase, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Maki Iwase is the winner of the Teaching Assistant Award.  This award recognizes effectiveness in bridging the gap between instructor and students; for example, through the support of students preparing papers and through the provision of constructive feedback through grading. The award is both course instructor- and student-nominated

Willi Kirenko, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Willi Kirenko is the winner of the Excellence in Online Teaching Award.   This is a peer-and student-nominated award that recognizes excellence in teaching using virtual modalities as demonstrated by the ability to stimulate student engagement, innovation, enthusiasm and critical thinking in online courses or online components of courses.
