University Professor Emeritus Linda Hutcheon, Faculty of Arts & Science

University Professor Emeritus Linda Hutcheon of English and the Centre for Comparative Literature has received an honorary doctorate from Romania's University of Bucharest. The citation called her "impressively widely read and travelled, splendidly supportive of her colleagues and greater than life within her profession."

Professor Michael Smart, Faculty of Arts & Science

The C.D. Howe Institute has announced the appointment of Professor Michael Smart as an Institute Fellow-in-Residence focusing on fiscal and tax policy.  Smart is a Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto. The C.D. Howe Institute’s Fiscal and Tax Competitiveness Council comprises 35 of Canada’s leading fiscal and tax policy experts, drawn from business, academia, and the public sector.

Professor Ken Burch, Faculty of Arts & Science

Professor Ken Burch, Department of Physics, has been awarded the 2012 Lee-Osheroff-Richardson North American Science Prize, sponsored by Oxford Instruments.  The aim of this annual prize is to support the career development of young scientists conducting research employing low temperatures and/or high magnetic fields in North America.

 

Professor John Myles, Faculty of Arts & Science

Sociology professor John Myles was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Leuven, Belgium,  in recognition of his life’s work on old age security policy. The citation acknowledges Myles’ theoretical and empirical contributions to the comparative politics of old age security in western democracies.

University of Toronto Bone and Mineral Group, Faculty of Medicine

The University of Toronto Musculoskeletal Centre, an extra-departmental unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Sunnybrook and Mount Sinai Hospitals, announced the results of its Inaugural Studentship Competition, offered in partnership with the University of Toronto Bone and Mineral Group. Congratulations to the following recipients.

Professor Ed Cole, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Ed Cole of the Department of Medicine and Division of Nephrology, Toronto General Hospital, is the recipient of the 2012 Canadian Society of Transplantation Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the highest award presented by the CST and was awarded to Dr. Cole for his significant contributions to transplantation in Canada and continued important work in the support of scientific research in Canada.

Drs. Daniel Drucker & Gideon Koren, Faculty of Medicine

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) have selected Dr. Daniel Drucker (Banting and Best Diabetes Centre) and Dr. Gideon Koren (Department of Pediatrics, Hospital for Sick Children) as recipients of this year's awards, which recognize the efforts of exceptional researchers in Canada whose achievements changed the course of health-care delivery in their field of work.

Professor Molley Shoichet, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering

Professor Molley Shoichet of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering is the recipient of this year's Clemson Award for Contributions to the Literature presented by the U.S.-based Society for Biomaterials. This award recognizes significant contributions to the literature on the science or technology of biomaterials. Shoichet holds the Canada Research Chair in Tissue Engineering, and her research currently focuses regenerative medicine, drug delivery and tissue engineering strategies to overcome diseases in the brain and after breast cancer.

Professor Emeritus Laszlo Endrenyi, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Emeritus Laszlo Endrenyi of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has been recognized as a Fellow of both the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences, in recognition of his contributions to pharmacokinetic modelling and its applications to drug development.

Dr. Charles Tator, Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Charles Tator, Department of Surgery and Toronto Western Research Institute, has received a College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Council Award for 2012 in recognition of his achievements in neurosurgery research, education, teaching and advocacy.
